The Voice of Peace was a
"pirate" radio station, broadcasting from the Peace Ship,
a converted trawler. It was located off the coast of
Israel from 1973-1993. The story of the Voice of Peace is
inseparable from that of its founder and owner Abie
Nathan. Abie's life as a fighter pilot, restaurateur,
peace campaigner and social issues activist is well
documented at
abie-nathan.com.Abie passed away on August 27th 2008 following a long illness. More details here.
A museum commemorating Abie and the Voice of Peace is under development at the Givat Haviva site in northern Israel. For a taste of what will be on offer there, check out the Peace Museum Visit link.
The pictures
in this collection are mostly from the period 1986-87 when I worked as technician and presenter on the ship. Click here for the pictures.
The Peace Ship itself was
sunk shortly after the station went off the air in late '93.
In the last few years, the radio station has experienced a renaissance. The (legal) station Radius 100FM
has been running Voice of Peace shows since November 2006. The
show plays original Voice of Peace jingles, music that was
popular during the ship's time on air, airchecks
and occasional interviews with some of the original presenters.
There are also a few classic commercials of the time.
The show was initially presented by former Voice of Peace
DJ Jimmy Jonsson.
The current schedule is:
- Sun-Thu 1700-1800 (Israel), 1600-1700 (CET) Twilight Time
- Sun-Thu 1800-1900 (Israel), 1700-1800 (CET) Voice of Peace
- Sunday - Gil Katzir
- Monday - Tim Shepherd
- Tuesday - Gil Katzir
- Wednesday- Mike Brand
- Thursday - Tim Shepherd
Everything is broadcast in English. The shows are either live or prerecorded at Radius.
The shows are aired on the original VoP FM frequency of 100FM in central Israel, cable/satellite across the country, and on the Internet at
100fm.co.il. The website also gives access
to the Voice of Peace forum and archive pages where you
can listen to previous shows on demand.
